How to Hire a Graphic Designer
Working with a professional is critical because, contrary to some beliefs, there is an art and a science to communication design.
Let’s take a brand identity, for example. Think of it this way. When you first meet someone, that interaction either reinforces or counters your preconceived notions about him/her, based on what someone else told you, or on your reaction to factors such as how they dressed, something they said, or other factors. Good or bad, that notion will stay intact until something triggers your mind to think differently about that person.
Likewise, people have preconceived feelings about a company, organization, product, or service that are positive, negative, or ambivalent. Those feelings can be modified or reinforced by marketing and advertising, web design, publication design, packaging design, motion graphics, and direct interactions with your products and services.
The best design solutions take into account how target audiences consume information.
With logo design, for example, there is a sequence of cognition:
- Shape: Shapes are simple, and processing them first allows for quick decision-making
- Color: Color is slightly more complicated since it’s tied to instinct and emotion
- Content: Content is the most complex since it needs to be deciphered or translated before its significance is clear
