An online search will confirm that there are many choices for graphic designers.

But suppose your company needs more than a visual facelift. Given the option, wouldn’t you prefer to work with a partner who is going to offer you more than just great design? Your business deserves great results!

What is Graphic Design?

According to the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), graphic design is defined as “the art and practice of planning and projecting ideas and experiences with visual and textual content.” Another way to describe graphic design is “visual communication.”

When it comes to marketing, this skillset is integral because whether the initiative is online or offline, the execution needs to be professional, on-brand, and fit within your omnichannel marketing strategy.

Designers create a wide range of marketing materials but to help you put our role in context. Our part touches the following:

  • Brand identity (logos, names, taglines, stationery, brand standards guides)
  • Brochures & Folders
  • Print & Digital Ads
  • Websites
  • Direct Mail
  • Billboards & Signage
  • Exhibits & Displays
  • Posters
  • Infographics
  • Ebooks
  • Videos

How to Hire a Graphic Designer

Working with a professional is critical because, contrary to some beliefs, there is an art and a science to communication design.

Let’s take a brand identity, for example. Think of it this way. When you first meet someone, that interaction either reinforces or counters your preconceived notions about him/her, based on what someone else told you, or on your reaction to factors such as how they dressed, something they said, or other factors. Good or bad, that notion will stay intact until something triggers your mind to think differently about that person.

Likewise, people have preconceived feelings about a company, organization, product, or service that are positive, negative, or ambivalent. Those feelings can be modified or reinforced by marketing and advertising, web design, publication design, packaging design, motion graphics, and direct interactions with your products and services.

The best design solutions take into account how target audiences consume information.

With logo design, for example, there is a sequence of cognition:

  1. Shape: Shapes are simple, and processing them first allows for quick decision-making
  2. Color: Color is slightly more complicated since it’s tied to instinct and emotion
  3. Content: Content is the most complex since it needs to be deciphered or translated before its significance is clear

So before you jump onto an online site that promises you “three concepts in 24 hours” or settles for what your internal team scratches out on the back of a napkin, ask yourself if you want your brand perception to ride on quick and dirty, or strategic and professional. If it’s the latter, you will find your business in a much better position.

At Incite Creative, we understand the value of visual design and how it fits into the overarching marketing ecosystem.

We are art directors with award-winning design skills, and can also mentor and manage graphic designers you may have that you need us to manage as part of our CMO role.
